Queen Street, Oxford

Faint Map of a City Streets Network with a Central Circular Interchange Light Gray Lines on White Background

Project Details:

Location: Oxford
Service: Topographical and Utility Survey

Project Overview:

Queen Street is in the centre of Oxford and is a busy junction that forms part of the A420 main thoroughfare through the city. We were asked to provide a complete topo and utilities survey of the junction to an unusual level of detail.

The Challenge

In order to get an accurate 3d model of the area we were required to take levels every 150mm. This would have been extraordinarily time-consuming using traditional methods so our solution was to scan the junction at night.

The point density of the laser scan enabled us to produce the model to the required accuracy while also mapping the complex runs of underground utilities.

We established site control and related it back to the site datum we had placed for a Topographical Survey carried out several years previously.
Then we started to scan the tower both internally and externally using spherical reference targets to help stitch the scans together.

Our solution

Firstly, we appointed a dedicated Project Lead based in the office to oversee the entire project and a site-based team leader to supervise the surveyors on site. A combination of various surveying methods was required including Mobile Mapping, Terrestrial Scanning as well as conventional methods. Some work was only safe to carry out at night under Traffic Management protection. Progress was relayed back to the office where a daily Teams meeting was held to update the client, review any issues and find solutions if necessary. Data was processed daily to ensure on site teams had thoroughly completed the areas before they moved on to the next task.
